Women in Computing at Rochester Institute of Technology presents WiCHacks

RENEE: you see this event is really encouraging
and empowering because I’ve been to other hackathons and I felt like kind of
not comfortable enough to either be in a team with all guys or not comfortable
enough to say everything I wanted to just like a fear of like oh I might ask
me a dumb question DOMINIQUE: you can be in a class of 30 people and you could be the only girl and sometimes it’s intimidating RENEE: but here I definitely feel like I’m in a
safe space and I’m working with my friends which is always a great time and
also seeing all the companies that came to support women in computing is also
really encouraging DOMINIQUE: being able to be in a place we are surrounded by so many
people like you that you probably don’t even know exist and are there for you is
just empowering and it gives you a sense of belonging LINDSEY: we pride ourselves on a creating a collaborative environment where everybody works together and
everybody focuses on improving each other’s skills it’s not necessarily
about the prize or what they win it’s more about learning and having fun
SUZIE: this event is particularly important to me because I was a part of our RIT’s
women in computing when I was a student here at RIT it was really great to come
back as a sponsor and see the event from the other side and to also see how much
the event has grown CARLYLE: it’s really important to really think about
technology and diversity and technology and through all dimensions right so as a
company as a person is something that I’m extremely committed into and I want
to make sure that we’re doing everything within our power to make sure that
everyone has the opportunities that I was fortunate to get myself SUZIE: so for me
when I was in stood and I participated it was really important to be able to
kind of have that judgment free zone or I could kind of be myself I could learn
and I could network with different people JACKIE: we could be like we can
inspire younger the younger generation and younger girls that hey we’re at this
hackathon it’s not just a male-dominated thing us we must can do just as well as
males you
