TUM Elektroingenieurinnen im Portrait: Rita Dornmair

My name is Rita Dornmair, I am 29 years old and work as a research assistant at the Chair of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems. As part of my doctoral thesis I am doing research in the field of renewable energies. For example, I am interested in what changing electricity demand means for renewable energies and CO₂ emissions. I am looking for ways to better integrate renewable energies and reduce CO₂ emissions. It is a much discussed and very exciting topic and will probably change our way of life in the future. I studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at the TUM. At school I had a lot of fun with maths and physics, so I wanted to study something that combines both subjects. Furthermore I liked the fact that my Electrical Engineering studies are very application-oriented. Also, the program had no admission restrictions, so I could have a look at the studies first. What I particularly like about my work is that I have plenty of time to think and come up with ideas. So I have relatively little time pressure in my research. In addition, I can research something without having to produce a result in the end. At the university no result is a result aswell. I really enjoy this freedom to simply pursue ideas. Like all other PhD students, I supervise lectures and dissertations. But it’s also nice to be able to think outside the box from time to time. For example, I am involved in the university policy. I used to be a member of the student council and now I am a member of the faculty council. For example, I can have a say in how the faculty will develop in the future.
