Steve Borwell talking about the Computing Showcase

My name is Steve Borwell-Fox. I run a
software company in Malvern called Borwell, we’ve been in business 12 years and most
of the staff are software engineers writing applications for government
defense and private sector businesses so the Showcase is really good opportunity
for the final year students in mainly computing and gaming graphics courses to
showcase their projects that ok there are work in progress but it’s really
good to see this time of year how much they’ve done on what they’re looking to
do and as a business of course we’re looking for talent and we’re looking for
to see what skills people are developing and some of the ideas that come up with
as well that perhaps we haven’t seen in business community yet. Last year it was
amazing there were different projects on offer there was some of the software
some of the web some that were just focusing on things like the user
interface and the user experience and it was one team in particular last year
that I thought were very good because they really got the sales organized the
team which is quite risky so work rather than working on individual project they
put themselves on a team of three they had t-shirts printed with a logo on they’ve
got a name of the team they’ve got clear roles as well there was clearly one was
a graphics on it one was a project manager and one was the software
engineer and they had all their kind of like storyboard with them so they were
telling the story about this game they were going to write they’re handing
written it but just the amount of passion and ideas they had about this it
was really good to see it’s a great event to go to as an employer seeing
technology seeing the young students and their ideas. Last year we we actually
recruited somebody from this event so we met several people here
and two or three of them really stood out which we invited in and one of them
now is now working with us full-time so you know I’m looking to recruit today as
well as to give feedback to the students to help them hopefully get the best mark
they can get for their projects. So the reason that Worcester is unique the
computing school is getting and the business school getting a better and
better reputation year-on-year so you’re seeing local employers obviously
attending events and we are interacting a lot more the university than perhaps
we did several years ago and I welcome that and I think the University of really key
to do that.
