Preparing for the AP* Computer Science A Exam — Part 1 | Cooper Union on edX | Course About Video

ANITA RAJA: Hi, I’m
Anita Raja, professor of Computer Science at the Cooper Union. Welcome to the Advanced Placement
course in Computer Science A, which is equivalent to a
first semester college-level course in computer science. From health care to finance,
telecommunications to commerce, government to entertainment,
arts and architecture, computational systems are
shaping the world around us. We want you to be in the forefront of
the next wave of computational change. This rigorous and highly engaging
course will introduce you to the fundamental concepts
of computer science. We have structured this
course to encourage you to think computationally
and enjoy problem solving. Object oriented design using
the Java programming language forms the core content of this course. You will have access
to practice problems that will teach you to
program efficiently. Just as importantly, these problems
will take on the format of the AP exam, with online multiple choice
questions, drag-and-drop coding, fill-in-the-blank code, and
audio tours of the code. You will also learn that STEM–
that’s short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math–
can be a lot of fun. We have assigned these online lectures
to be interesting and informative. So that you not learn the how of
problem solving but also the why. This is crucial to becoming
a successful programmer. We will showcase exciting
careers in computing and explore New York City’s sights
through the lens of the computer scientist. I hope you will join us. [MUSIC PLAYING]
