Introducing NVivo 10 for Windows Software

When it comes to investigating an issue, answering
a question or simply making sense of something — we often look to information to help us
get there — and it’s rarely just in the form of numbers. You might be evaluating social policy. You might be reviewing patient feedback. You might be researching youth culture, or
undertaking postgraduate research. The challenge with this sort of research is
that the once you’ve collected your information… ….what do you with it? That’s where NVivo comes in. NVivo is software that supports qualitative
and mixed methods research. It’s designed to handle non-numeric data like:
interviews, open-ended survey responses, literature reviews, and web content. Let’s imagine you were researching work-life
balance, and that your project involved: survey responses, interviews, field notes, and web
pages. To better understand how NVivo assists you,
picture an empty room where you’re going to work with all your information. Regardless of the research method you use,
there is one thing that’s for certain when handling qualitative data; If you don’t use software — you work will
likely be more time consuming, challenging to manage, and hard to navigate. And importantly, working manually can also
make it very hard to discover subtle connections in your data. NVivo gives you a place to organize and manage
your material so that you can start to make sense of your data. It also provides tools that allow you to ask
questions of your data in a more efficient way. Now that your research is at a point where
you can start to easily work with it – let’s look at the data analysis process. For this example, we’re going to take this
approach. Here’s how NVivo can help… Let’s go back to imagining your ‘work-life
balance’ study…. With NVivo you can easily import a whole range
of different kinds of data. As you read through your material, you might
see a number of people talking about ‘balance’. So you highlight this and store this in a
container or ‘node’ – called ‘balance’. You then decide to investigate further. What words have people used most frequently? You may want to actually see how people are
talking about ‘balance’ specifically. With NVivo you can take stock of what your
data is saying about balance all in the one place. And finally this all might come together as
a report or presentation. So by using NVivo to help on this project
you’ve: worked efficiently, saved time and built up a quality picture of the data. You were also able to: quickly organise, store
and retrieve data, uncover connections in ways that simply aren’t possible manually;
and rigorously back-up findings with evidence. With NVivo, your research is portable. You can work in the field, at work, at home
— anywhere. NVivo also keeps your projects secure. And if you want to collaborate with others
— NVivo offers a team-based solution too. Thanks for taking the tour.
