Connect Any Hard Drive to an iPad Pro

Connect Any Hard Drive to an iPad Pro

hey what’s up it’s Jerad with State of Tech
so say you have a hard drive a one terabyte hard drive like I have right
here and you have an iPad maybe it’s the new iPad pro 2018 11 inch or maybe it’s
the previous year iPad and you don’t want to spend all of that money to get
that external storage you’re thinking I would love to have 512 or AG a terabyte
of storage space on your iPad but you don’t want to spend that money because
you already have a hard drive and we already know that we can’t plug this
hard drive directly into an iPad so what do you do well you use this cool device
from ravpower to connect and then get access to all of that storage and more
let’s take a look all right so here we are with the iPad
and we have our one terabyte Samsung hard drive here and so this is gonna
work regardless of what kind of hard drive you have as long as it can of
course be powered if it’s a small hard drive like this like a solid-state drive
or a small bus powered which means it will be powered by the cable itself here
you could actually this is all you’re gonna need but if it’s a bigger hard
drive like one of the bigger external hard drives you’re actually still gonna
need to plug that into its power source but we’re gonna be able to connect a
very large hard drive to an iPad which means you don’t necessarily have to buy
a large iPad I know that Apple wants you to buy that one terabyte spend that
almost two thousand dollars on an iPad but you just simply don’t have to do
that especially if you already have a hard drive all you’re gonna need is this
ravpower device here which is a an expensive device well under $100 I
picked this one up on Amazon for $65 and what this device allows you to do is
connect a variety of things to your iPad and it’s great because now we can
connect any hard drives that we have to our iPad so that we can copy over video
content copy over photos whatever it is stream stuff straight off of our hard
drive it’s amazing so beyond the ravpower device you’re actually going to
need the rav file hub app now once you turn this on and configure it you have
to connect to the device it puts off its own Wi-Fi network and it kind of acts as
a router it’s not a hotspot but it acts as a router so what you can actually do
is connect to this device and then you can connect this device to a Ethernet
cable such as this Ethernet cable right here and it can actually provide a Wi-Fi
connection to your device as well so this would work really good say you were
at a hotel room and they provide internet through a cable but if you want
Wi-Fi it’s gonna cost you money you bring this device you connect their
cable to it and then it’s going to produce a Wi-Fi signal for all of your
devices to connect to pretty awesome so we’ve got our hard drive here
we have our Rav power router here we’re gonna open up the file hub which
connects to this device and we can either just put our SD card from our
camera in here or we can connect a harddrive to it obviously the purpose of
this video is to connect a harddrive to it so we’re going to do that so we’re
gonna grab our hard drive here and I’m just simply going to plug it in and
let’s make some room for all this stuff here scoot this over and you can see
it’s starting to connect and we should see a notification pop up in the app
here letting us know disk detected there it is we have now 931 ish gigabytes of
storage connected and how much is available obviously I have a lot of
stuff on this drive already so if I click on file management I’m accessing
this drive right now that is amazing and just to show you how
really how fast it is let’s go into a previous video project I did a video
which is on the Canon a DD camera almost three years later because it’s almost
three years old for ditch auto another YouTube channel that I do and this video
is 4 point 4 1 gigabytes and it is 4k I wonder how long it’ll start take to
start playing it it’s gonna load a little bit of that video it’s doing all
this wirelessly keep in mind boom and it’s already playing it’s already
playing that video how cool is that ok so of course we can stream content
from a hard drive which is great for those of you with a bunch of movies and
stuff on a hard drive very easy to do that what about copying content from a
hard drive over to your iPad or vice versa very simple to do that so let’s go
into one of these folders and let’s just see what we can find and copy over so
we’ve got a whole bunch of like dmg s and JPEGs so RAW images and JPEG images
here so if we click around on some of these they should open up and we can
actually view them as photo of my daughter right here and
of course the entire app runs in landscape mode but then of course when
you look at a photo it opens it up in portrait mode for whatever reason there
we go we got it back so you can see here it’s
like giving me previews and look how fast Lee I could like toggle through
these images and just scroll through them it’s amazing how fast this is
Wireless this is Wireless folks so there’s a few things that we could do I
could like hit play and it just does like I think it does a slide show and so
I’d probably want to go and and yeah there we go so it’s doing kind of a
slideshow type of thing interesting so we’ll tap to stop that so
if you want to copy a file off of the hard drive the best way is just to go
back to the files tap and hold here and choose copy to and then choose iPad
photos and then you can choose one of your folders that you already have there
on your internal storage or of course you can create a new folder I’m just
going to tap all photos and this is all the photos that I have on my iPad
already and I’ll tap paste and it’s going to go ahead and download that
image and then I can go out into my Photos app
and I should be able to see that image up there it is right there as one of the
most recent downloads so this is pretty exciting be able being able to connect
to a external hard drive and of course even get content off of my iPad onto an
external to free up additional space let’s go back to that Rav file hub app
so you’ll notice here that we have both the file hub and the iPad here so if I
go to iPad and tap on iPad photos and then come and choose from one of my
folders so we’ve got all of our different images folders so say I go to
all photos and I’ve got maybe like a couple of photos that I have from
earlier so we’ll go to multi select and choose just a couple of those maybe
these are from dinner last night I’ll go ahead and hit copy to external storage
it automatically connects to that hard drive I can go into my photos folder on
the hard drive and then click paste and it’s actually now copying images you can
see the HEI see images off of my iPad on to a hard drive so I mean how amazing
is this now we don’t have to go and buy those extremely large iPads if we
already have a hard drive it’s very easy to connect that hard drive using this
$60 device so that we can connect and have additional storage and not
necessarily have to worry about spending that premium price with Apple
all right so I hope you like that video we just added a terabyte of storage to
an iPad without spending all that money using a hard drive we already had and of
course we can use that hard drive for so many other things like plugging it into
our PC or our laptop or our Mac or whatever now we can use that storage for
a lot of different things and not necessarily have to go out and spend all
that money on that iPad so remember links are down in the
description below to the ravpower device that I was using and a couple of hard
drives that I recommend as good solutions for connecting to your iPad so
make sure to check out those links and thanks again for checking out this video
click that subscribe button to be notified when we put out new videos and
give it a thumbs up if you liked it take care and we’ll see you back here in the
next one

100 thoughts to “Connect Any Hard Drive to an iPad Pro”

  1. Great Device and Review. Will this work with iPhone 7, iPad mini, and all iPad's? What about MacBook Pro? How long does the devices' battery last?

  2. This works only for videos and photos ? Or for files as well ? For exemple if i want to transfer files who are on a USB key or a hard drive on my iPad is this possible ? Thank you for the answer 😁

  3. Hey thank you for the video…researching to update my IPad because it’s 3 or 4 years old…really digging the 11” Pro and this just adds to the excitement…thank you for taking the time to post this…

  4. Great Into. Thanks. Is there a way to transfer files from Ipad Pro to a printer without wifi? Will this work without WIFI?

  5. This is just a commercial, hes probably getting paid. Hes saying is super fast but it didn't load the rest of his pictures

  6. Sry but this has some downsides:

    – you need to have that device carried with you
    – it needs to be charged
    – the Wi-Fi Interface interface is occupied by that device

And 100 Bucks Yeah it's not expensive but it gets way more cheaper.

I prefer cloud storage, there are plenty of options out there to host your stuff in the cloud storage (nope it doesn't need to be Apple) or in your own house as well if you prefer the physical control over the storage as well.

I use a combination of all the options above, I have that Apple iCloud Storage cause it comes with the account, I have a cloud storage at a data center, Dropbox and my own NAS at home. I'm not willing to drag a hard drive and it's clunky "WiFi Adapter" around to have more storage.

  7. AFTER ABOUT THIS I TRIED TO TRANSFER A VIDEO AND I KEEP GETTING THIS ERROR AFTER 14 % TRANSFER THEN I TRIED IT THROUGH THE COMPUTER AND IT SAY "FILES LARGER THAN 2GB CANNOT BE UPLOADED TO " AND THE VIDEO IS ABOUT 1:46:29. JUST SO YOU KNOW I HAVE THE MODEL: "RP-WD009 / 2019 VERSION NEW" WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!

  8. Will this work Even if you have a password on the external hard drive? Mine seems not to read the hard drive. Maybe I need a different cable ?

  9. Quick question throwing it out their why is it so difficult to have a fast wifi over local area network transferring files like gigs of data ? Too and from devices.

  10. This was very helpful with me transfering pictures from my iPad Pro to my external harddrive but why won't it transfer my RAW files from my iPad to my external harddrive? Thank you for this video tho. Please help if you can.

  11. Nice gadget but at the same time infuriates me all we have to go thru thanks to those vultures at Apple.

  12. I have a WD network drive which does the same thing and is 6TB. The network drive is shared with 2 PCs as well.

  13. its really pathetic how an £/$800 so called PRO device still restricts you to jump through so many hoops to get basic features on a device

  14. Great video. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but can you also transfer/edit etc Excel, Word, PDF documents in this way and with this device? Cheers

  15. wanting to change over from a computer to ipad to edit photos but the only drawback is not being able to give clients their photos on a memory stick. I will keep watching videos and see if anyone has had success with that.

  16. OMG this is exactly what I have been looking for for the last 2 years! This will be a game changer for me! Thank You!

  17. Thanks for sharing! This file hub is an excellent piece of hardware, easy to handle and almost completely configuring itself once plugged to the modem and a harddrive. Backup of my photo library was relatively fast via 5GHz. The iOS app has a good UI, just the web interface is „a bit“ rudimentary (to say the least). Also I don‘t like being redirected to a third party website for signup …

  18. How did this company get apple to bend over so they could put out a device that cuts the price of a product apple sells? Help me out here plz Im not getting it

  19. Or you can just have everything in the cloud ( like I do) and download any file whenever you need it. Simplicity is the whole point of having a mobile tablet like iPad pro, instead of something like laptops.

  20. The video is helpful for sure ..but why we have to look around for solution for this or that when it comes to simple tasks for connecting your devices (ssd, sd cards, etc) .. its iOS limitations for sure .. the pro is a piece of art .. but you can do this simple task with a 100 $ android tab or even a phone .. Apple should start giving us proper file system for ios " specially ipads" or they should just come up with new OS .. lets say pOS (pad OS) and start giving the customers what they asked since ages..

  21. Incredibly informative! Thanks. Normally, with the Apple card reader, you have to download a photo onto the iPad to view it in full resolution rather than just a thumbnail. It looks like with this hub, you can view photos full-screen right from the hard drive. Is that correct? Could you use this hub to connect a wired printer to the iPad? I assume the printer manufacturer would have to have an app for the drivers.

  22. You can hook up an external hard drive directly into a Surface Pro .
No hunting all over creation for usb ports because it already has one built in .

  23. I’m not worried about pictures I know how to get that off with out the pad without that…what about a a movie or a 10 gb project..how long would that take to drag on and off the ipad

  24. Great video, thanks for sharing it. The only thing you never mentioned anything about and I kept wondering is if you can copy files to the internal iPad storage through the files app from the external HD. Would love to find out. Thanks again. Toodles.

  25. Question please – Can I upload photos from a CF card, process them on the ipad and then export them to the Ravpower device as another storage for saving? Thank you!

  26. Let’s say you’re traveling Can multiple iPads connect and access different files from the same hard drive

  27. I bought that and it does transfer video but it doesn’t play correctly. Audio plays while the video stops

  28. Now you don't need to do that either. Cuz with the shiny brand new (iPad os) it supports external drive nativly

  29. hello jared, thanks for the video. i was wondering if i could use the ORBI Mesh Network Router instead of RAVPOWER as instructed to connect an iPad Pro 10.5. thanks.

  30. Will this device work with an iPhone and can you use the camera on the iPhone to record video directly to it

  31. Since the ipad is connected to the Rav device's wifi, can the Rav device connect to my iphone's hot spot so i can post directly to the internet from the connected hd? This is the problem i have with my wd mypassport w/ wifi. It will not connect to my hotspot so content has to be saved to the ipad first then disconnect from the passport and connect to the hotspot then post. A pain. I live and travel and photograph on the road in my camper van so there is no wired connection a available. Is this rav device my solution?

  32. The information on the Amazon ad says will not work for Mac formatted hard drives. This seems like a deal breaker as everything I own is “Mac-centric”. Any suggestions for a work around to this problem?

  33. Can i send files from Photoshop etc. that i make on iPad? (Like drawings, sketches, 3D models)?

  34. You actually don't need any hardware wifi solution buy File Explorer Pro from the App store and you can access any drive or share on your network or any network you can log into including, Windows, Mac and Linux. Just browse the network as usual and have access to anything you need. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fe-file-explorer-pro/id499470113

  35. pretty neat, but my guess is that the fact your external hard drive is SSD rather than spin, makes a difference in the transfer speed.

  36. How to trust that they are not copying our data in the background and misusing it i might go traditional style by lightning to female usb👏🏼🔥

  37. Damn!!! AMAZING product and video. Thanks SOOO much!! Just one question…does the external hard drive NEED to be formatted to Apple OS in order to use? I have an existing hard drive that I use on my PC and would like to NOT have to format it for OS and then not be able to go back and forth between formats if I can avoid it. Thanks for your time and video.

  38. Thank you for this video. Just received my Samsung T5 2TB and thought I’d just try to plug it in. Should of seen the plume of smoke. Na, just kidding. But I was hoping to move some videos over like Futurama to my 2017 iPad 12.9 so I could watch them on the plane ride from Dubai to Dulles. TMI. Not enough time to order this but I have an app that I came move files over from my NAS. Might order one of these just to have it in the US when I get there. Cheers, thanks again.

  39. What version is your ipad pro? I am wondering if it's the same model and version as mine. I have the iOS 12.3.1

  40. This looks like the solution I need. We just recently purchased the 3rd gen IPad Pro recently because I am sick of Windows. I have an external hard drive, but didn’t have a way to transfer data/files from the IPad to it. This looks very user-friendly! I assume I could use this device for an IPhone XR or an older IPad mini?

  41. How about If transferring 4k videos from XAVC S from Sony mirrorless? Because I've only seen WD wireless transfer to ipad pro it's working. But this would work also? Because WD a bit expensive and I have a Samsung T5 ssd. I hope I get a response from u. Thanks a lot Jared..

  42. So is this technique useless with the ipad 2018 with the 32GB drive? I can't believe they made the base level ipad with such a tiny drive. I'm helping someone with this.
