  2. Those gpu's have crossfire so why don't you use them? The processors would be used more efficient so that you will reach more speed. So why don't you use crossfire?

CPUs, GPUs, and in the future, neuromorphic processors each give efficiency improvements depending upon the type of data processing you need.  Lately, linking GPU cores efficiently has given a gigantic speedup.  Mid-sized firms are able to afford a "super computer," but most simply don't know what to do with them, even though they could benefit from one running various processes on their accumulated big data.  There is gold in them there data stacks.

  9. how's ur computer compare to china's tianhe 天诃 supercomputer.

    i happened to have a small hand in the development of tianhe with their original group(yinghe/prof. zhou ximing), and i have some ties with japan's fujitsu.  do u think japan would be interested to collaborator with china to develop the ultimate computer.  

    my company has been instrumental in converting nuclear codes to the 1st supercomputer cray, with our automated supercomputing environment ROBACUS.  so, i ll be tempted to get out of retirement and put ROBACUS on such a joint product between Japan and China.

Technigeek, I see you read and respond to people's comments here so I have a question for which I hope you can answer for me, right now, the X99 chipset that was released is highly expensive given the cost of the supporting cpu's and memory, however, there do exist much older (and therefore, cheaper) solutions. In this video I noticed that there were in fact what appear to be mATX boards sitting side by side with cheap fans blowing air on them (quite effective I'm sure as it reduces the need for central A/C). Now, I own a Rampage III Gene by ASUS (also mATX and much cheaper than X99 and close in specs) that I managed to get operating beyond it's limits since it's using technology it was never meant to, specifically, an X5690 server CPU as well as 48 GB ECC memory, which is double it's specified maximum capacity. By itself this is capable of at least a teraflops in performance, would a large collection of these be more effective than the setup shown in the video, 1, and 2, would it cost less???

  17. Anyone can build computer, cluster of computers! This dud prove it! All you need is the cash to make it. It was and will always remain the problem because a single of these workstation are about 1000$ each. The real problem today is to make a self aware computer that understand and interact with us. Now try to prove me wrong if i am cuz we haven't achieve this yet!

    Currently they cost $4129.00 USD each from Intel. No doubt bulk would be cheaper.

    On the high end outside of bulk, it would cost:
    28216.66666666667 * 4129.00 = 116,506,616.6666667 (116.5 million USD)

    Actually, pretty cheap considering it would be equivalent to the worlds fastest computer. That said, there would be other outlays that would nominally increase the price. For example, warehouse facility (next work out building dimensions required), ventilation (fairly cheap), server stacks and couplings, operating system designed for clustering, cooling etc. Could be done affordably compared to the virtual clusters of PCI Express cards above. Not to mention the enormous electricity requirements.

    It's getting cheaper and cheaper with every passing year. Obviously this is due to Moore's law of exponential growth which is close to annual, doubling processing power with each turn. Hence such theories as the 'Singularity'. Next we should see the growth and proliferation of quantum computing.

    Fascinating times we live in when one thinks of the fact that a successful individual, a small company/organization, or even a crowd funded project could achieve among the fastest floating operations per second (simultaneous calculations). The worlds fastest at 33.86 petaflops is equivalent to 33.86 quadrillion simultaneous calculations per second.

    Of course, there are always cheaper options as above such as GPU clusters, but there are logical limitations (accuracy) with GPU's over CPU's. Of course, the cost outlay in comparison would ensure incredible speeds at a fraction of the cost.

They might not be able to function at 4GHz, but their instruction set is re-programmable and each one can have Thousands of inputs and outputs, yet it runs off of ~100 watts.

  22. It ain't pretty and they can use come cable managment. But the cost is a fraction of a modern day SC! Not fo mention the size!! I know people are also developing raspberry pi's into an SC format. So things will be interesting forsure!

  25. This is more like a cluster computer instead of a supercomputer. You can make something like this if you get Debian along with MP on each node.
