BYU Women in Computer Science – Spring Cullen

so I think that being a woman in CS there are more doors open to you simply because people want more of that diversity I walk into a classroom like I’m the only girl and then sometimes I’m like scared like wear bright dresses or like skirts club like I already stand out like what I want to stand out more I started attending a club called women in CS you don’t realize how many women there are in computer science until you go to that club in your individual class maybe there’s two or three but in the club you finally realize like there’s actually quite a few a few concerns that come up being a computer science major and being a woman is like looking forward to your future family and your family life and how you’re gonna go about that route and to be honest one of the reasons I picked computer science as my major is because it’s a perfect job for a mom it’s one of those jobs that you can work anywhere from my current job I clock in from my apartment at like 11:00 at night I code on my couch until I’m done and then I go to bed you know it’s not a job where you have to be in the office I think taking into account it’s like being a woman in CS and some advice I’d give to others is that in this field where there’s not many women sometimes you want to protect your image but it’s okay to ask questions it’s okay to seek help from others I think it’s important that we just do our best to learn as well as we can but when we do struggle or you do have problems to reach out and there’s a huge support group here you can work through it together
