BSc (Hons) Computing

[Music] [Applause] [Music] The BSc Honours in computing is a free choice degree where the students focus on general issues of computing. All our courses have a common first year, the benefit of that is that we are giving the students a chance to actually discover their own strengths. So you cover things like databases, networking, start covering Java and that’s reasonable for me because I wasn’t sure what kind of computing I wanted to do I started uni. I think I’ve learned more about web than I thought I would and I think the business aspect side. There’s this exhibition right now which is quite a team-building exercise. My self-confidence has definitely improved, my communication skills definitely and I’d also say my presentation skills have really improved since I’ve been here. From being able to present and talk to a company you learn an aspect of proffesionalism that you wouldn’t otherwise learn because you have to dress up smart and talk to employers and present yourself well. Usually the job opportunities are anything in IT so it can be from programmer to networking, it can be systems modeling, software modeling or even project management as well. So I’ve actually managed to secure a job with my placement company, I’m going to be a team leader actually of a small team making ecommerce websites. I’ve got to say if I hadn’t done a placement I wouldn’t have done nearly as well in my final year. All our courses are accredited by the British Computing Society we have close links with the society so we actually host several conferences here as well. The campus we are on itself with the facilities and labs that have different equipments as Kali Linux and the library is great. It has five floors worth of books and places you can study. We have a cyber security lab as well where the students can actually play war games and essentially simulate real attacks. So there’s a wide variety of lecturers here, there are people that have been in industry for quite a few years and they’ve come in to teach. They have guest lectures, it’s normally someone from the industry or sometimes it’s an academic from a different University that come in they like to give a talk. I’d say come down here and just have a look for the feel of the campus, as soon as you get here it’s just such a nice atmosphere to learn in. I know itt sounds cheesy but it really is. [Music]
